Forced medical boarding

An associate of mine has the following problem:

He works in the laboratory however has diseased kidneys which means he has to go for dialysis 3 times a week.  Arrangement with the company says he can go for treatment and mostly works his time in and works some Saturdays.  His health does deteriorate every so often with the result that he is booked off.

Yesterday he was called by HR to come in from sick leave today, for a meeting with management.  His meeting today, minus HR present he was told that they want to force a full medical boarding and are thus arranging for medical examination by their appointed medical practitioner as he is resisting (basically will not be able to afford medical aid from there).  He was told should he refuse, he will be held fully accountable for his performance from here, despite his health and will be dismissed as a non-performer. His ability to go for treatment in company hours will also be discussed.

What can he do to get maximum benefit from this as he will not be able to live on the amount proposed?  What are his rights in respect of the process, can he be forced out of this position?  He has not even been offered a desk job so that at least he can get a salary and live.  As 30-something he has a long time to go to survive on medical boarding.  As he does not have legal cover he will be at the mercy of the company.
