Last month I was sick and took one day off as sick leave to recover. I did not go to a doctor and get a sick note. At the end of the month I was not paid for this day and upon querying the matter I found out in my contract it is stated that I must bring a sick even if it is for one day. I know that in Labour Law it states a medical certificate only has to be brought in after two days of consecutive sick leave, is it legal to demand a sick note even if it was only one day off ??

Kindly note that the provisions of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act may be varied by agreement between the employer and the employee, which is by way of the contract that you mentioned.

If you did not provide a sick note, you would not have received sick leave for that day, which means you were absent without leave.
