Work allowance

For the past eleven months my employer paid me work allowance and lately he decided to cut the amount. Is he justified in terms of the law to do that? Is there difference between allowances and bonuses? This started when i questioned about overtime, sundays and public holidays pay. Is this unfair labour practice?

Good day

Firstly, I believe that there is a difference between allowances and bonuses. An allowance would be given to make  work less costly on the employee such as a petrol claim. A bonus on the other hand would be given as an incentive for work done well or properly in certain cases.

Secondly, in order to determine if the deduction of the work allowance constitutes an unfair labour practice I will need additional information.  Are you the only employee who has received the deduction or is the deduction applicable to all employees? furthermore, if you are the only employee who has received the deduction, what is nature of your work in relation to the amount of work allowance that your job requires?

We are five dog handlers in our company, for ten months we received R1100 as allowance for fifteen shifts. End of september we received R1300 as allowance, three of us are now working 20 shifts. When i questioned about overtime and sundays, the office decided to pay R180 as allowance and use the other money to pay for sundays and overtime. This was only done to the three of us who happen to work 20 shifts which amounts to 240 a month
